MovieCrow Box Office Report - September 24 to 27

Even as movies like Thani Oruvan, Maya and Trisha Ilana Nayanthara were going strong at the box office, last weekend saw the release of National award-winning Kuttram Kadithal, Kirumi and Unakenna Venum Sollu. While the former two movies have received positive reviews from the movie buffs, they could have garnered more attention if they were released on a more prospective date, without much competition. Check out the box office ranking of Tamil movies in Chennai during last weekend.

1. Maya

Nayanthara's Maya, directed by newcomer Ashwin Saravanan, has yet again proved that content is the king. The terrifying horror movie managed to get close to 90% occupancy levels in the city during last weekend, with prime shows being sold out completely.

2. Trisha Ilana Nayanthara

GV Prakash's Trisha Ilana Nayanthara retained most of its screens from the first weekend, in spite of the mixed reviews. This 'A' movie targeted at the young audience, registered around 80% occupancy levels across major multiplexes in the city during last weekend.

3. Thani Oruvan

Jayam Ravi's Thani Oruvan has entered the league of very few movies that have managed to attract repeat audience this year. In spite of the drop in the show count, the movie did receive healthy footfall rate in its fifth weekend.

Other Movies

Kuttram Kadithal and Kirumi received their share of appreciation, but both the movies had a limited release and occupancy levels were also nothing to rave about. Newcomers' Unakenna Venum Sollu sank without a trace.

Upcoming week's releases

Vijay's Puli will be taking the box office by storm on October 1, and one can expect all the other movies to lose majority of their screens to Puli.
