Mani Ratnam turns Money Ratnam

After his last few films bombing at the box office, Mani Ratnam was back with a bang as he got back to his comfortable genre, romance. The movie was a fresh take on urban romance, with many of the ardent fans considering it as a modern day classic.

Horror Still Rules

It looks like well-made horror films can never disappoint the trade as well as audience. Raghavan Lawrence's Kanchana 2 was such a huge blockbuster that many trade pundits called it as the biggest hit (in terms of ROI) this decade. Arulnithi's Demonte Colony also found its takers in multiplexes, which made the film a sleeper hit.

Kaaka Muttai breaks the myth

Director Manikandan's Kaaka Muttai broke the myth that national award winning movies don't perform well at the box office. The movie revolving around the slum kids and their love for pizza, received overwhelming support from the audience across all centres.

Novel attempts

Indru Netru Naalai, based on time travel, is going strong at the box office, thanks to the indulging screenplay. Yagavarayinum Naa Kaakka, with a relatively fresh cast, is being lauded as a worthy attempt by the team. Purampokku was a notable film based on capital punishment, but wasn't entertaining enough for the audience. Aishwarya Dhanush's Vai Raja Vai received fairly positive reviews, but couldn't set the box office on fire.

Kamal Haasan - The Mystery Man

Kamal Haasan continued to be the mystery man for the audience. While some of the critics analyzed and appreciated every single shot of his Uttama Villain, the larger section of the audience found the film to be far from being impressive.

Suriya - Venkat Prabhu disappoint

In spite of positive reviews, Masss couldn't sustain at the box office after 2 weeks. In fact, movies like Demonte Colony replaced Masss, which is a clear sign that audience have started encouraging well-made movies irrespective of the stars and budget involved.

Thumbs down to clichés

Movies like  Nanbenda, India Pakistan, Inimey Ippadithaan, Eli and Kaaval were replete with clichés, and the audience did not quite support them.
