MovieCrow Box Office Report - May 15 to 17

Jyothika's comeback film, 36 Vayadhinile, and director SP Jananathan's jail drama, Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai, had hit the screens last weekend. Both the films opened to fairly positive reviews and received no big complaints from the critics. Check out the box office ranking of Tamil movies in Chennai during last weekend.

1. Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai

Thanks to a huge star cast that includes Arya, Vijay Sethupathi, Shaam and Karthika Nair, the movie created good buzz before the release. SP Jananathan has once again come up with a strong message oriented film, while a section of the critics felt that the packaging could have been more interesting.

2. 36 Vayadhinile

If it was English Vinglish for Sridevi, it is 36 Vayadhinile for Jyothika. The performance of this ageless actress has won the hearts of people across all age groups among family audience. With positive word of mouth flooding in, one can expect the movie's collections to soar high.

3. India Pakistan

Vijay Antony's India Pakistan had to leave way for the new releases, and the movie failed to create an impact, unlike Vijay Antony's first two movies as hero. It looks like Vijay Antony might miss his hat-trick.

Other Movies

Kamal Haasan's Uttama Villain had lost majority of screens in its third weekend, which means that the movie hasn't made the trade people happy. Kanchana 2 was still going strong across limited screens, while Vai Raja Vai had to settle under 'Average' category. OK Kanmani managed to attract audience across multiplexes, and with the movie already been declared as a 'Hit', the focus is now on Mani Ratnam's next film.

Upcoming week's releases

Arulnithi's horror film, Demonte Colony, will be hitting the screens on May 22. It would be interesting to see if yet another horror film succeeds at the box office. However, it will not be easy as Suriya's Masss will have an earth-shattering opening on May 29.
