Vanmam Review - Dull Vengeance

Vanmam – Dull Vengeance

Bharath Vijayakumar

Sometimes in cricket, a batsman will blaze into a half century in no time and all of a sudden he will change gears to play a struggling and sedate innings. We would have no clue as to why it happened? Vijay Sethupathy seems to be in a similar phase with Rummy and now Vanmam.

Plot:

Two friends who will not waste a minute to hurt someone to prove their friendship turn into foes and then waste no time hurting each other.

Cast:

This is a film where almost every actor has one common trait. And that is ‘to go through the motions’. It is disheartening to see someone like Vijay Sethupathy do this. The first half in particular is so uninspiring that you wonder whether all the actors are showcasing an exhibition of ‘acting with disinterest’. Vijay Sethupathy does regain some lost ground in the later half when his character has some purpose.  Kreshna seems to be continuing from where he left of in ‘Vaanavaraayan Vallavarayan’ and he is another actor whose choice of his recent two films is baffling.

What went wrong?

You can sense as to why the lead actors may have signed up for this film. At the crux is an interesting one liner that involves friendship, betrayal, guilt and vengeance. Probably what they foresaw was a tension filled rustic drama. The end product does leave the audience tensed but for a completely different reason. After a point of time even the viewers just go through the motions. The scenes in the first half before a crucial murder are disjointed and have no sense of coherence whatsoever. The tale does take a few interesting turns after this. But all these are presented in the most uninspiring manner.

One thing that you would probably take home from this film is the unique dialect that the characters speak.

Bottomline:

Vanmam gives you a bland experience. And this is the last thing you want in a film with a title that means vengeance!!!
