Thirudan Police Review - Revenge Meets Comedy

Thirudan Police -  Revenge Meets Comedy

Bharath Vijayakumar

Just like the breed of meticulous directors who always tread away from the beaten track there a few actors who follow suit. Dinesh made an impression with his portrayals in both Attakathi and Cuckoo. The interesting aspect is that even the films in which he played cameos or small roles that might go unnoticed are films that caught our attention. E, Aadukalam, Mouna Guru, Edhir Neechal and Pannaiyarum Padminiyum – an impressive list indeed!!! Does he continue this impressive streak with Thirudan Police? Read on to find.

Plot:

Thirudan Police is about a wastrel son who realizes the worth of his father rather too late. He has a rather important mission as well, which is to avenge his father’s murder.

Cast:

Dinesh impresses with his casual body language. In a film that is relatively more mainstream when you look at his previous works he does not go overboard and plays wells within limitations. Thirudan Police is another smart selection from the youngster. Rajesh and ‘Aadukalam’ Narain prove their worth with convincing performances which had the potential to turn melodramatic but thankfully avoided. This is the hardest you might have laughed at the villains in a long time. Rajendran and John Vijay are absolute screams. The final twenty minutes is bound to make your stomach ache and this duo is majorly responsible for that.

Hits and Misses:

The most striking aspect of Thirudan Police is the way it keeps things simple and fun. While the basic thread is rather old school that revolves around revenge the film strikingly deviates from the routine through the abundant dash of humour. The hero never turns super heroic. The villains are a scream. The pacing of the film is neat and you hardly have a stretch anywhere that bores you. The romantic portions are what might irk you a little with cliché written all over them. But thankfully they are kept to a minimum and so are the songs which hardly impress you. It is rather a surprise that Yuvan Shankar Raja is the man behind these songs. The idea of roping in Vijay Sethupathy for a song looks like a hasty decision. Dance is obviously not his strength and he could have rather been used more effectively in a couple of scenes.

Bottomline:

An ode to fathers that never turns melodramatic, Thirudan Police is a neat entertainer. With an old school plot that surprises you with an unexpected treatment laced with humour this is an impressive debut in direction by Caarthick Raju.
