Jaihind 2 Review - Part Melodrama and Part Action

Jaihind 2 – Part Melodrama and Part Action!!!

Bharath Vijayakumar

Arjun the director is back after a hiatus. Naming the film as a sequel to his hit from the 90’s, has he adapted himself to the changing sensibilities of the movie going audience today?

Plot:

Unlike most of his previous films that had the hero waging a war against anti social elements from other countries trying to play havoc in India, Jaihind 2 focuses on a different problem plaguing the society. The film tries to offer solution to the problems created by privatization of education.

Arjun the actor:

The film entirely rests on his shoulders. As an actor he does what is best suited for this film. He has always conveyed heavy emotions through appreciable underplay and that continues in his latest offering as well. His agility at stunts does not need an introduction. But maintaining it over a considerable period of time is no mean effort.

Arjun the director:

The film starts off with some interest trying to spruce up the proceedings by deviating from a linear narration. Where it flounders is the manner in which the theme of the film is narrated through an incident in the life of an economically struggling family. This portion of the film reeks of melodrama and almost forcibly makes us accept the narration on screen. While the content itself might be well within realistic limits the way it is presented is exaggeration to the hilt. A couple is ready to kill themselves and their most prized possession rather than have her study in a government school!!! A major portion of the film looks like a dubbed version and in all probability most of the scenes might in fact have been shot in a different language. This is the third film in a short span following Kaththi and Oru Oorla Rendu Raja where the antagonists are from the corporate and business sector. And much like in Kaththi the hero stands up in front of the media to gather public support.

The second half is considerably better and focuses on Arjun the action hero getting things done rapidly. The stunt sequences themselves are crisp and mercifully lets go of the done to death tactic of the hero getting beaten to pulp and then hitting back. Another redeeming feature is the almost absent duets. I say ‘almost’ because there is one at the very end at a crucial juncture that you wonder why now and not earlier.

Bottomline:

Jaihind 2 provides some good action with Arjun at his best. The highly concentrated melodramatic portions only end up diluting the end product.
