Review Inputs from Akilan Nagarajan | Reviewpuram

1. Pakkam Vanthu    (Listen here)

Singers: Anirudh,  Hip Hop Tamizha | Lyrics: Madhankarky, Hip Hop Tamizha

"Pakkam vandhu Konjam Muthangal" has repeated loopy tracks with medley of techno, rap and local instruments such as nadaswaram and thavil laced in between with melodious track. The song showcases Anirudh's keenness in experimenting with uncommon mix of instruments and music style.  A leniently composed track that will be bent on Vijay’s moves on the dance floor. But not enough to set the layman’s legs going...

2. Paalam (Listen here)

Singers: Shankar Mahadevan, Swetha Mohan  | Lyrics: Yugabharathi

"Paalam" song appears to be a friendly contest song. The song has heavy focus on lyrics with back and forth exchange of repartee. The music and tunes are pedestrian and has no recognizable touch of Anirudh in the song.

3. Lets Take a Selfie Pulla  (Listen here)

Singers: Vijay, Sunidhi Chauhan | Lyrics: Madhankarky

After delivering a chartbuster in 'google google', Vijay continues to keep his singing form in "Selfie Pulla", Anirudh and team has a good pulse read on the current youngsters. This song well capitalizes the craze associated with 'Selfie', Instagram(am), Facebook, Photoshop and other social platforms. The lyric make interesting opening lines related to terrabyte, bytes and bits. For some reason, the song deviates from this novel concept and adopts a bit more of mundane lyrics in the second stanza.

4. Nee Yaar Petra (Listen here)

Singers: K.J.Yesudas  | Lyrics: Yugabharathi

"Yaar Petra Magano" is KJ Yesudas first time singing with Anirudh. After Anirudh's working with Janaki in VIP, the young composer opts for the  legendary singer, Yesudas, this time. Yesudas keeps his range in control as he manages to render it in his recognizable style. The pacing and instruments are atypical for a Vijay movie. The very straight-forward tune leaves a lot to depend on the visuals. The song expected to help bring the emotions when seen on big screen.

5. Aathi  (Listen here)

Singers: Anirudh, Vishal Dadlani | Lyrics: Pa.Vijay

Vishal Dadlani weaves magic again with his mesmerizing  voice in quintessential Bollywood flavour. And the surprises don’t stop there, as we also have a revamp of the theme music to fit within the tune. Aathi enna Nee is probably that one song that is aimed at satisfying the fans waiting for that one long lasting melody song. The convergence of rock and melody with marching beat are all masterfully orchestrated. The song should do well.

6. Kaththi Theme Songs - Sword of the destiny & Bad Eyes - Theme

The Sword of Destiny (Theme) (Listen here)  – As unflappable as in the teaser, and sounds even better towards the end with the vocals rendering a broken chant of the title. This theme is sure to gather loyal following, with all the awe-inspiring energy it exudes.

Bad Eyes (Villain Theme)  (Listen here)– Classically bad-ass. The minimalist orchestration makes it even the more haunting. Sure to do what it is meant to – Be menacing, and cool at the same time. Anirudh makes up for his uninspiring song tracks with couple of exceptional background themes that set the right mood for the movie.

Summary :

This much awaited album combo boasting the untested combination of Vijay-Anirudh-AR Murugadoss is sort of a let down. Lack of an instantly catchy song and the Anirudh's signature melody song are major shortcomings in the album.

Rating : 6/10

Kaththi music is not sharp enough.
