Vaanavarayan Vallavarayan Review - Buffoonery gone wrong

Vaanavarayan Vallavarayan - Buffoonery gone wrong!!!

Bharath Vijayakumar

With a title reminiscent of some comedy movie from the eighties and a trailer that was quite ordinary with insipid dialogues, 'Vaanavarayan Vallavarayan' did not set our expectations very high. But with Kreshna who tends to choose films with care there was a glimmer of hope. What does the film finally offer? Read on to find.

Plot:

Two brothers indulge in the most audacious of activities that is supposed to make us laugh. They continue doing this for well over two hours.

Cast:

For a film like this to work at least to a certain extent we need say a Sathyaraj and Goundamani combo from their hey days. Kreshna and Ma Ka Pa Anand are in almost every frame from the start to end. But they fail to create any impact whatsoever. And they cannot be entirely blamed because it is tough to rise above a script like this and catch the attention of the audience. We have well known artistes like Sowcar Janaki,Kovai Sarala, Thambi Ramiah and Jayaprakash. We only end up feeling sorry for them.

Songs:

The songs are pretty okay. But not exactly of the standard you would expect from a Yuvan Shankar Raja musical.

Clean f(A)mily film:

The introduction scene of our hero brothers is more than enough for us to resign to the fate of the film. We have a middle aged lady bending down to bless them as they keep feasting on you know what. Actually you might not know because the censor board is obviously very smart and uses blurs to protect the modesty of the woman on screen. You then realize you are watching a 'U' certificate film. The crudeness does not stop here and shows it's head now and then and reaches a point where we have double entendres exchanged between parents in front of their grown up sons. Probably the censor board members were too innocent to understand these jokes and hence the 'U' certificate.

Bottomline:

'Vaanavarayan Vallavarayan' is a two hour challenge to the audience to 'Laugh If You can'. The audience unfortunately cannot live up the challenge despite their best efforts. But  there is one thing that the film succeeds in. It lowers the bar for comedy to such a level that you are likely to laugh your hearts out the next time you come across an ordinary joke.
