Irumbu Kuthirai - Totters To The Finish Line

Bharath Vijayakumar

Bikes, girls and action. Hear these three together and you will probably be reminded of The Fast and the Furious. Closer home Dhoom might cross your minds. The trailer of Irumbu Kuthirai(IK) looked like we might soon have our very own version of a film of this breed. Is Irumbu Kuthirai worth to bet on? Read on to find.

Plot:

Contrary to what we might expect IK is actually a love story with bike racing as the backdrop. Prithvi (Atharva) is a single doting son of a widow who unlike boys his age is most of the time seen in a pensive mood. Enters Samyuktha (Priya Anand) and his life seems brighter to him. All this while we are frequently reminded of Karthik's uneasiness with bikes. The reason behind this and the consequences of Karthik's past is the rest of IK.

Cast:

Atharva puts in a decent performance. The romantic portions between him and Priya Anand look plastic. The later has a certain flair but her character sketch is rather hollow. Lakshmi Rai completes her task very early on in the film with a song and thereon chips in now and then. The dubbing voice for her is a complete mismatch. Devadharshini and Jegan are able to leave a mark despite the short screen space. Johnny Tri Nguyen does look menacing. But when you have him alternating between chaste Tamil and an highly accented English you cannot blame him for the poor impact. And what was Alisha Abdullah (real life racer)  actually doing in the film?

Crew:

The songs hardly create a flutter. And yet they keep coming at such a high frequency. In a film that runs for just over two hours it makes no sense.Particularly when none of them manage to catch your attention. Cinematography is impressive. Pondicherry has been captured aesthetically and the film has a sleek look. A lot of hardwork has definitely gone in the making of the stunts and the race sequences. But when the intent fails to strike a chord with you it hardly matters.

Direction:

The basic problem with IK is that it fails to make any sort of emotional connect with the audience. And when the plot itself actually depends on the emotional turmoil of it's protagonist this is definitely a dampener. For a film that involves racing, the film moves at a rather slow speed. The short running time turns into a saving grace for the film. When the promotions focused so much on the racing aspect it is that part of the film that the audience would be highly anticipating. But this is reserved for the last few minutes and even then what we are subjected to is hardly exciting. On the positive side the basic thread of the film is an interesting one and there are some genuine surprises that we might not anticipate. But the lead to those moments and the after effects are hardly interesting.

Bottomline:

This horse hardly gallops. Some pleasant visuals, the sleek look and the crisp running time lessen the damage.

Rating:2/5
