Velaiyilla Pattathari Songs Review

The kolaveri boys, Dhanush and Anirudh, are back again with yet another chartbuster album, Velaiyilla Pattathari. Anirudh's range of songs in this album is impressive while 'poetu' Dhanush as lyricist is in full form. Dhanush and Anirudh have also decided to sing all the songs except the one Dhanush sings with veteran singer S. Janaki. The fact that there is no lead female singer(for heroine) in this entire album is a noticeably unique attempt.

 Song Track Reviews

Anirudh has introduced the hard rock genre through the title track, "Velai illa pattathari". Anirudh's vocal chords must have taken a huge toll in this song. Even though the opening may draw comparisons to AR Rahman's 'Sadda Haq' and "I Stand Alone" from 300, the attempt is new to Tamil and sure to become a mass hit. Composer/singer Anirudh hits the ball out of the stands in this title track!

In "Amma Amma", Anirudh has composed a diametrically opposite song. The song is well conceived about a son's loss of his mom. The second stanza is sung from the point of view of his dead mom who consoles her bereaving son. The highlight of this song is Dhanush's profound yet simplistic lyrics beautifully sung by S. Janaki and Dhanush. Anirudh will melt your heart with his mature composition.

"Po Indru Neeyaga" is yet another Anirudh style melody. Dhanush scores again as lyricist in this song. Even though Dhanush is well controlled in his rendition of this song, a more accomplished full-time singer may have taken this song to a higher levels. Expected to be another chart buster in this album.

"Udhungada Sangu" is a frustration song sung by Anirudh superbly blended with 'kuthu' and melody. The beats and accompaniments kick in at the right moments to energize the listeners. Usually, Anirudh's themes ("Sunrise" and "Smiling with Pain") have excellent orchestration and tunes. Both these themes will serve as background tracks expected to work well when watched within the context of the movie.

"Whatta Karwad" is along the lines of "Why this kolaveri". The song has popular lines used by youngsters in social sites and forums. Dhanush and Anirudh show that they are in tune with the current generation and willing to go all out in having fun. The lines "aaniya pudunga vendam" and Dhanush finishing the song with "dei chee"  will bring smiles to listeners.

The only song in the album that did not (yet) make a big impression is "Ei Inga Paaru" sung by Anirudh aims to bring out the comedian inside the protagonist. It is an easy listen.

Conclusion: VIP passes without any arrears

Anirudh's consistency is mind boggling so far with 4 out of 4 chartbuster hit albums. Anirudh is proving that he is truly a prodigy, at least so far. What's amazing is all his 4 movies are for new directors and 2 out of 4 movies for emerging heroes such as Sivakarthikeyan and Siva. Just imagine what this young talent could do as he starts working with accomplished directors and actors in 2014. Anirudh and Dhanush will rule the charts and FM stations during the days, weeks and months ahead.
