Star is an upoming Tamil movie written and directed by Pyaar Prema Kaadhal (2018) fame Elan, and the movie stars actor Kavin as someone who struggles to find his footing in the film industry. Post Star's trailer release which featured a scene where Kavin is criticized for his face, and his character vows to make everyone remember it, it was widely speculated that this is inspired from Tamil star actor Vijay, who faced it in real life during the earliest stages of his career.

Director Elan however clarified in one of his interviews that while he did not have Vijay in mind writing that part of Star, he did have his father Pandian, who was a struggling still photographer for most of his career. In another interview Elan compared what Vijay went through in his real life in terms of facing criticisms based on his facial features, and what his father Pandian went through in his life stating that it is common for most people trying to make it in films. 

 

"The poking fun of Vijay Sir's face (in the early stages of his career) has happened to my father as well, and is showcased in this film (Star). This is a common thing to everyone." - director Elan 

 

Incidentally, actor Kavin too has shared that while Star is biographical in the sense that the movie is inspired by many incidents director Elan has gone through in his own life, the film's lead star was able to relate to it to it as his own journey in the movies as well.  To the extent that during filming, Kavin asked his director many times if he re-wrote* any parts to befit Kavin's casting.

Kavin also appears in a lady getup in one portion of Star and the actor has said that he took inspiration from the comedy character 'Kareena Chopra' Santhanam played in All in All Azhagu Raja (2013). “The character Kareena Chopra played by Santhanam serves as the inspiration for me to don the lady getup”, stated Kavin in an interview.

Star with music by Yuvan Shankar Raja has a single titled College Superstars, which was unveiled on Rajinikanth's 73rd birthday on December 12, 2023. The song, set against a 90's college background is a tribute to Superstar Rajini. Star releases in theaters worldwide on May 10, 2024.

The movie is a production venture of Rise East Entertainment and Sri Venakteswara Cine Creations, and also stars Lal, Aaditi Pohankar, Preity Mukhundhan, Geetha Kailasam, among others. Prime Media is releasing Star movie in the US.
