Coolie squad Vs Ilaiyaraaja: Tamil twitter in chaos while the maestro chills at Mauritius after sending copyright notice!

Soon-to-be 81 Ilaiyaraaja is the man-of-the-hour in Tamil film circles at the moment, as the veteran music composer has Kollywood buzzing with his 'bold' move of sending a copyright notice to Sun Pictures, producers of Rajinikanth's upcoming movie Coolie

Coolie written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj had a title teaser release less than a week ago, and the video was accompanied by a Anirudh Ravichander composed track, which sampled the Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa song from Rajinikanth starrer Thangamagan (1983).

Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa is an Ilaiyaraaja composition and when the 81 year old composer shared the remixed 'Coolie Disco' song on his YouTube page, it was presumed that all permissions were properly obtained especially since Ilaiyaraaja is big on them, and is currently fighting a case to legalize them as well in India.

However Ilaiyaraaja was shockingly revealed to have sent a copyright notice to Sun Pictures for not obtaining a proper NOC from him, the author of said music. Ilaiyaraaja has demanded that either the company do that now, or remove the Coolie Disco song in totality from the movie. This had opened up debates on copyrights in the Indian music industry, which is very closely connected to the film industry in the country.

Tamil twitter was expectedly in chaos with divided opinions, and mostly making light of the 'power move' Ilaiyaraaja made at brands like Sun Pictures, actor Rajinikanth, music composer Anirudh Ravichander and director Lokesh Kanagaraj. Amidst all this, Ilaiyaraaja on Thursday posted a picture of him chilling at Mauritius, rubbing salt into the wound of those back in India, especially the ones melting through the heatwave of Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
