Soon-to-be 81 Ilaiyaraaja is the man-of-the-hour in Tamil film circles at the moment, as the veteran music composer has Kollywood buzzing with his 'bold' move of sending a copyright notice to Sun Pictures, producers of Rajinikanth's upcoming movie Coolie.
Coolie written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj had a title teaser release less than a week ago, and the video was accompanied by a Anirudh Ravichander composed track, which sampled the Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa song from Rajinikanth starrer Thangamagan (1983).
Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa is an Ilaiyaraaja composition and when the 81 year old composer shared the remixed 'Coolie Disco' song on his YouTube page, it was presumed that all permissions were properly obtained especially since Ilaiyaraaja is big on them, and is currently fighting a case to legalize them as well in India.
However Ilaiyaraaja was shockingly revealed to have sent a copyright notice to Sun Pictures for not obtaining a proper NOC from him, the author of said music. Ilaiyaraaja has demanded that either the company do that now, or remove the Coolie Disco song in totality from the movie. This had opened up debates on copyrights in the Indian music industry, which is very closely connected to the film industry in the country.
Tamil twitter was expectedly in chaos with divided opinions, and mostly making light of the 'power move' Ilaiyaraaja made at brands like Sun Pictures, actor Rajinikanth, music composer Anirudh Ravichander and director Lokesh Kanagaraj. Amidst all this, Ilaiyaraaja on Thursday posted a picture of him chilling at Mauritius, rubbing salt into the wound of those back in India, especially the ones melting through the heatwave of Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
Chilling in Mauritius killing the Coolie squad 😂

But, the reason why so many people are against him is not just because of this particular incident. https://t.co/qwpDlbR1DL
Is there any proof that says Yuvan just went on to use Raaja Sir sings without permission?
— Sai Balaguru Ganess (@sai_balaguru) May 1, 2024
Yuvan clearly says he gets NOC from Raaja Sir before using any of his songs.
For the sake of a meme let's not spread falsehood. https://t.co/woU0Q65trf pic.twitter.com/exoKRPSW2f
For ages, it's the norm for composers to seek NOC from both the original composer, lyricist & producer.

For Billa, I haven't come across MSV claiming any dispute with respect to credits or royalty. If you are aware, please share.
Echo Audio (in a legal battle against Raaja) licensed the songs to Sony. I guess Anirudh would have used this route for copyright and not got permission from Raaja. If so, it’s unethical and nasty because he knows that Raaja is fighting a case against these companies.

He is fighting for ownership of something he created. And a bunch of corporates say that he doesn’t own anything he created. You decide which side you want to be. #Ilaiyaraaja pic.twitter.com/xDr559DR4d

They dont need to sell it to Sun, Orchard who is distributing music on behalf of sun is part of sony. many albums which were acquired by sony in IR's music is also available in IR's IMM label, ex: Michael Madana Kamarajan, How to name it, Thangamagan, etc., Similarly IR's IMM had…

What is the agreement between the producer & technicians working in the film with regard to their outcome. It is just rental only for the film or are they paid fees for the product. Like architect or mason who designs or builds a house? #laymanask@Dhananjayang @archanakalpathi https://t.co/6LKx1LZW27

Very poor optics by Sun TVhttps://t.co/g4RCVXKNKA
Since #Coolie's #Disco is trending now it's better to bring the Copyright issue. If #Ilaiyaraaja doesn't fight for his rights, he would have got INR 0rs as royalty, whereas every one would have benefitted out of it. Meanwhile Raja would have got only this "Raja, Raja thaan 👑"…
