Annadurai Review – Double the action , half the fun !!!

Bharath VijayaKumar

It could be very easy to write off Annadurai as a film belonging to the 90s with the way it narrates a sentimental drama with the hero being the symbol of everything that is good and noble. But to be fair to G.Srinivasan he manages to keep this age old drama alive and kicking for atleast eighty percent of the film's running time . Every ten minutes I was thinking that the film is filled with cliches but why am I not getting bored?

Vijay Antony does everything that our superstars have been doing for ages. He does not have to pursue girls as it is the other way around. He gets the typical mass hero entry and an action sequence at every opportune moment. He hardly has to flex his muscles as everyone is down with one punch of his. Sentiment, love, comedy and action – this is that film that fits in everything to try and cater its star to the masses. It is only the action sequences where Vijay Antony looks the part with his sharp eyes. The heroines were a bit of a surprise. They put in a pretty decent performance and it is a rather pleasant change to have heroines who look like people from the real world.

The issue with the film is that everything is treated simplistically. For instance the hero gets jailed for 7 years but in the film this entire period is condensed into a maximum of five minutes. This works in two ways. We never get to feel the pain or the emotional turmoil of the hero. But for those who are not into the film this swift movement ensures that a lot of boredom is pushed aside. But the literal absence of difference in the way Vijay Antony portrays the two characters is an issue. There is so much difference between the two – one is a drunkard and the other is a teacher. But beard is the only difference we see on screen. Most of the trouble that the character 'Annadurai' faces in the film arises out of his inability to forgo alcohol. He has resorted to this to overcome the loss of a loved one. But this never comes across convincingly on screen. He actually looks pretty normal most of the time when he is around with his family or his friend (Kaali Venkat). It is as though he turns to the bottle only when the screenplay requires him to be unstable. Also a lot of fun is lost with both the brothers being equally powerful in dealing with the villains. Even in Mersal, Vettri had to be a little more brawny than Maaran. But here nobody can stand in front of either of the brothers.

Bottomline:

Annadurai is one of those films which might or might not work with you, based on your sensibilites or even the frame of mind that you are in. As a movie it has an endless list of issues. But if a scale for boredom is the only criteria for evaluation, the film manages to scrape through.

Verdict:

2.5/5
