Padmavati release date postponed, CBFC's Shyam Benegal criticises BJP government

In case you missed it, Viacom 18 Pictures that holds the release rights of Deepika Padukone starrer Padmavati, announced last evening that they will not be releasing the movie on the said date i.e. December 1, 2017.

Though they haven't announced a release date as of now, the decision to change the release date after violent threats were directed towards Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Deepika and Ranveer Singh has attracted far amount of criticism from the film fraternity. Veteran director Shyam Benegal, who has been put in charge of drafting new guidelines for the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) crticised the BJP government saying,

“Will people ask for heads publicly and offer money for the lives of those who disagree with them, and the state will do nothing to prevent it? The Home department and the police should move in immediately and offer protection...When chief ministers and members of government adopt such an approach, what else will the administration do?Else, isn’t it the job of government to prevent (threats of) murders and attacks when being made publicly on national TV? People are being threatened publicly."

Added to this, former Maharashtra Chief Minister's son and actor Rietesh Deshmukh has also appealed to the government to look into the public threats being issued. Celebrities like Parineeti Chopra, Sonam Kapoor, Varun Dhawan condemned the violent threats and some others including internationa star Ruby Rose issued support through their micro-blogging page.
