Justice League review - An archetypal superhero entertainer!

Justice League is another standard-issue superhero film (featuring the DC Comics icons) from Hollywood, with all the usual Good vs. Evil tropes. We have an ensemble of superheroes –‘Batman’, ‘Superman’, ‘Wonder Woman’, ‘Aquaman’, ‘Flash’ and ‘Cyborg’ taking on Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons. Steppenwolf looks to unite the three ‘mother boxes’ (immense source of energy) and wipe out all life on Earth. There is an interesting angle to Superman's part while the others are pretty straightforward. There are minor sub-plots for each of the characters.

The presence of so many superheroes and famous stars (Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams) is worth the price of your movie ticket. The action and the VFX are along expected lines, not rising above the usual, yet entertaining the viewer in 3D. The humour quotient (which worked wonders in the recent 'Thor Ragnarok') is limited here, with Ezra Miller (as Barry Allen / ‘Flash’) doing the honours. And, since the action is split among so many superheroes, none of them hogs the limelight. Still, ‘Superman’ provides some spike towards the end and earns the hoots from the audience. The scenes showcasing Flash’s incredible speed are presented through some cool visual effects.

'Wonder Woman' Gal Gadot looks expectedly incredibly beautiful while the graceful Amy Adams is in an extended cameo-like appearance. Ben Affleck (looking aged, jaded) sleepwalks through his part as Bruce Wayne / ‘Batman’ but the gizmos and gadgets at his disposal make for thrilling viewing. Henry Cavill is back with his sculpted physique; Jason Momoa (playing ‘Aquaman’) is another hunk in the cast. The scene when he is cast in a spell by ‘Wonder Woman’ and starts confessing is one of the genuinely fun moments in the film.

For loyal fans of Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, it'll be somewhat weird to see Ben Affleck, Jeremy Irons and J.K.Simmons enact parts immortalized by Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman respectively.

Bottomline

Justice League isn’t ‘must watch’ material but isn’t a boring experience either; it’s a passable outing. But with so many famed characters on board, one expected more!
