Tamil film industry stands by Vijay's Mersal, freedom of speech

It is impossible to have missed the controversy surrounding the Tamil film Mersal, if you've been following the news. It all started when certain ministers from the state wing of BJP came out in opposition of the film's scenes that took a dig at the Digital India movement and the high GST rates, minimal free facilities provided in the country. BJP National Secretary H. Raja has been the harshest critic so far, with him referring to lead actor as "Joseph Vijay" , accusing him of religious reasons for plotting against the Modi government, dragging his personal tax-credentials and what not. (H. Raja has even blamed the censor board for clearing the movie)

And despite the strong flow of support Vijay and his film Mersal have been receiving (BJP candidate Gayathri Raguramm being one of them), it is now being reported in news flash that actor Vijay has apologised for registering non-factual thoughts among people. (The one with Singapore providing free medical healthcare being the most scrutinised). Vijay has added that such information was used solely for the purpose of the film's dialogue.

Vijay's statement follows producers Sri Thenandal Films' decision to have the objectionable scenes removed, despite the overflow of support from fellow industry people urging freedom of speech, reminding that a film is just a product of fiction and requesting to not let political wings have say in their creative sensibilities.

Kamal Haasan
"Mersal was certified. Dont re-censor it . Counter criticism with logical response. Dont silence critics. India will shine when it speaks."

Mohan Raman
"By this protest against some dialogues in Mersal - BJP has helped in getting the film publicity and making Vijay into a mass "leader""

Khushboo Sundar
"Sme r bound 2 hve sleepless nights ovr #Mersal..demanding removal of scenes is yet another way of throttling freedom..it shows ur fear #BJP"

Pa. Ranjith
"There is no need to remove those scenes. Those scenes talk about what people are going through. When those dialogues were uttered, people applauded in theatres, this shows what people are thinking,"

Gayathri Raguramm
It's just a movie, just a role and actors don't write dialogue. Everyone has opinion. Let's not blame the actor. Movie cleared the censor.

Arvind Swami
By consolidating taxes,GST is making ppl aware of their contribution. Now  people will ask the govt for their due. What's wrong?#Mersal

S. Thirunavukkarasar (Politician)
"Media, artists etc have freedom to say their opinions. A movie reflects what people think, and politicians should take it sportively.....how can BJP ask for its removal?...Every movie maker has freedom of expression in a democracy...."

DMK spokesperson Saravanan

“Movie disclaimers say it is based on fictional stuff, then why is the BJP taking it so seriously? They are taking it too far,
