BO Economics 2 - Thuppaki Distribution and Rights

In the second part of our 3-part series covering Thuppakki's Box Office economics. we will cover the distribution details of the business done by Gemini prior to movie release.

a. Production Budget (AR Murugadoss), Producer(Thaanu) and Global Distribution Rights(Gemini)

b. Thuppakki Distribution and all other Rights (Satellites, Overseas, Music, TN, Other states)

c. Thuppakki Worldwide Box Office Collections (BO collections in progress)

Thuppakki Distribution and other rights is addressed here in detail. As mentioned in the previous article, it is estimated that Gemini bought the rights from V Creations Thaanu for roughly Rs. 62.5 Crores and spent Rs. 5 Crores for publicity expenses. When Gemini sold all the distribution rights, it is estimated to have done a business of around Rs. 80 Crores, making a table profit anywhere between Rs. 10 Crores to Rs. 15 Crores (subject to how much was really spent on publicity expenses). Note this doesn't include future incomes from selling remake rights and miscellaneous revenues.

Data Updated - Telugu distribution rights were bought by SVR Media for Rs. 6 Crores as deposit. Many sites have incorrectly reported much higher numbers. Since Audio Rights is retained by Gemini, this is an estimated value based on historical value of Harris' albums.

Business of past Tamil Movies

Other notable movies which have done business between Rs.60 Crores to Rs. 80 Crores are Sivaji, Kuselan, 7aum Arivu, Nanban and Maattrraan. Enthiran is the only movie in the history of Tamil Cinema which has crossed Rs. 100 Crores in terms of overall business value (from all languages).
