Hindi Medium Movie Review – Irrfan steals show in a thoughtful but
predictable satire!

In the recent times of Bollywood Masala films or the pursuit of unheard stories, we haven’t really seen an out and out comedy film or a film which takes a profound satire on the existing system. Hindi Medium is an effort very close to achieving that goal but not quite there.

Raj and Mita Batra (Irrfan and Saba), a well-to-do couple based out of Chandni Chowk decides to shift to a posh area in South Delhi for a better upbringing for her daughter Piya and to her enroll her into the city’s best English-Medium School. Obviously, it’s very hard to clear the screening for admission and therefore when they are unable to get through, they try to enroll Piya through BPL (Below Poverty Line) quota. But will their lie get caught, or will they be able to get Piya into the school?

The film deals with a very common problem that Indian parents face in our education system. Yes, it is extremely tough to get you child enrolled in a good private school and what all tests and checks parents and the child have to go through is insane. The film also explores the two worlds of people and the divide between English speaking and Hindi speaking.

Hindi Medium has its ups and downs in terms of storyline and storytelling. Some dialogues are brilliantly written but some really seem forced. In all, the film opens really well, goes to a high in the middle but a very predictable and loose end plays a spoiler. Nevertheless, a good effort by Saket, the director.

Irrfan Khan is the heart of the film and he single handedly carries the whole film with his epic delivery and acting. Saba does a decent job and so does Amriti Singh as the school principal. The kid’s performance is adorable. Deepak Dobriyal is outstanding in the limited screen time he has.

In all, if you are looking forward for an entertainment family film, you could give your 2 hours to this film.
