Bruce Lee Review - A complete miskick

The film starts with the quote 'I steal from every single movie ever made – Quentin Tarantino' which then changes to 'I inspire from every single movie ever made' – Prashanth Pandiraj. You like the director's confidence. But you do realize that he has already made a blunder. Did he mean 'get inspired' or is he 'going to inspire'. The sentence leans towards the latter but the 'from' ensures that we are as confused as the director.

Plot:

A timid guy named Bruce Lee.

We got the plot from the trailer itself but the film meanders along for a solid 2 hours that goes on forever. To the director's credit, he does have ideas. But they remain ideas and on screen they quite often end up as embarrassingly clumsy. Bruce Lee(G.V. Prakash) has Vijay posters all over his room, identifies himself as a Rajni fan in a song and there is plot point where he is actually a Mansoor Ali Khan fan. In a way this is how the film is. There is absolutely no clarity. It looks like a film made on the go with only the basic premise on hand.

There are some crazy scenes involving GVP and Balasaravanan. They get amused on seeing an aeroplane amidst a chase and take time to ogle at a girl in between a serious conversation. You cannot but laugh when Balasaravan turns himself away from the television as soon as he hears the title song of 'Solvathellam Unmai'. But this is exactly how you want to turn away from the screen for the most part of Bruce Lee. This is not a lazy film as you actually do get a sense of what the director wanted to make - A zany comedy with an unconventional hero/villain duo. But you never buy-in the eccentricity on screen. Munishkanth is exactly the kind of actor to play the villain in this film. But none of his scenes evoke laughter. At times you feel bad thinking what this film could have actually been and then there are those umpteen times when you feel exasperated.

The rape jokes are only getting uglier these days. The exact phrase that Balasaravan utters in a scene in the film is ' How could you try to rape my girlfriend. Even I do not get turned on by her?'. The censors do not have a problem with this. But there are so many beeps on words which could hardly cause a flutter compared to the poison the above dialogue could sow on impressionable minds.

Bottomline:

An interesting idea gone horribly wrong.
