Bharath Vijayakumar

Plot:

A murder followed by the who and why?

Yaakai starts off brilliantly. An eerie feel is established in the very first frame and the following 15 to 20 minutes generates a lot of interest. This is the best part of the film and sadly the rest of the film comes nowhere close to this.

This is also a film which shows that even Guru Somasundaram can have a bad day at the office. He completely loses it in trying to portray a certain eccentricity. It is good to see Prakash Raj in fine form and the best parts of the movie have him on screen.

Yaakai is suppossed to be a murder mystery and we have a romantic track running in parallel. Though integral to the plot, this might have not worked out even if the romance was executed well and here we have a track that falls woefully short. You get a sense of what the director wants to present but alas it is what translates on screen that matters.

The lone trick (though not very difficult to guess) of the film is revealed at the interval point and this ensures that whatever little steam remained is also let off. You decipher by this point what has happened and even the why is anybody's guess but we have one full hour that ensures we turn restless.

Bottomline:

Yaakai shows occasional flashes of what a good thriller it could have been. These flashes are too minimal to keep our spirits up in an otherwise tiring film.
