Bogan Review - A passable entertainer that is quite some fun

Bharath Vijayakumar

When Bogan was announced with Jayam Ravi and Aravind Swamy in the lead, one question would have popped up in many minds. "Is the casting decision a lazy one to utilise this combo that worked wonders in Thani oruvan? ". The good news is that Bogan does make good use of the duo and the good vs bad image that they carried in the earlier blockbuster.

Plot:

A swap of identities is what differentiates this masala entertainer.

Cast:

Bogan relies heavily on Aravind Swamy and he literally runs the show. A lot of time is saved by casting him and we do not really feel the need for he film to establish the demon in him. The pre - interval sequence inside a lock-up is the highlight of the film and Aravind Swamy rocks this scene. Jayam Ravi as always is earnest. He might not be really matching up to his nemesis on screen but you got to hand it over to him for starring in these films that ride on the charisma of the antagonist. Hansika gets the familiar role of a grown up with the IQ of a LKG student. The makers seem to think it is funny. The problem is that not everyone in the audience is a LKG student.

Lakshman :

Lakshman's debut Romeo Juliet had an interesting crux. The film began as if it was an important take on love vs money but it soon went down on a familiar slope. The director looks more confident in Bogan. The pace is consistently good. Even the not so interesting bits such as the romantic track move rapidly. The cat and mouse game is not the edge of the seat kind but definitely holds some interest, thanks again to the pace and the fact that the battle is not one sided. A little more imagination could have probably pushed this film much higher. Most of the second half relies on a single trick and the scenes follow a very similar pattern before rushing into a hurried climax.

 Bottomline:

Bogan offers some decent fun. While it had more scope, it is not a film that you have much to complain about.

Rating: 2.75/5
