Vetrimaaran's Visaranai Makes An Entry Into The Oscars

In a ground-breaking turn of events, Kollywood director Vetrimaaran's release of the year Visaranai, has been selected to make an entry into the 89th Academy Awards, better known as 'The Oscars'. This crime thriller which happens to be the 9th Kollywood movie to be representing the country seems to have brought the eluded honour back after 16 years. Hey Ram was the last movie to make it to the cut in the year 2000. The selection was made by the Film Federation of India (FFI) which comprised a 17 member jury and was headed by Ketan Mehta. According to Ketan, the jury's decision to pick Visaranai from 29 other movies was an unanimous one.

Visaranai will now compete against other countries in Foreign Language Film Category. Of the several hundred movies, only top 9 make it to the next round. This is followed by a screening from which the final five is selected. It is to be noted that only three Indian movies have made to the finals so far. Going by the history, the awards have always seemed to be in favour of Vetrimaaran. Will have to wait and watch if the streak lives on. Nevertheless it is a moment worth cherishing.
