Enakku Innoru Per Irukku Review - A Crowd Pleaser

Enakku Innoru Per Irukku – A Crowd Pleaser

 Bharath Vijayakumar

Mass movie genre has always been a staple fodder to our makers. And anyone who wants to be a star definitely has to do a successful film of this type. Times are changing and so has the way the fans look at this genre these days. You could so easily end up finding yourself in endless memes if you are caught on the wrong foot or if you even try to chew more than you can swallow. So Sam Anton toys with this genre and tries to give a new color to it. Sandwiched between spoofing and hero worshipping Enakku Innoru Per Irukku (EIPI) employs an interesting ploy to woo the masses.

Plot:

If you recollect the Vijayakanth starrer ‘Thenavan’ it had a track with Vivek who played a person who suffers from seizures and ends up as a don as a result of misconception. Replace Vivek with GVP and this is the crux of EIPI.

Cast:

Knowing your limitations and playing to your strengths within those limitations sounds easy. But look around and you will see not many are willing to do this. In that sense GVP clearly has a roadmap drawn out in front of him and he is surely taking a definitive step as a ‘saleable star’ with each film. He knows that a giant leap in the wrong direction and he might have to start from scratch. EIPI is another astute choice from him and he does fit in adequately. The list of comedians in EIPI is almost endless and each one does his part in passing the ball before the it finally finds the goal. Truth be said, there is no standout performance from any one of these comedians in this film. But the general mood of the film keeps the chuckles on.

Direction:

Playing out as a crowd pleaser EIPI should work as a fun outing for the undemanding. The references to Rajni, Vijay, Ajith and Bahubali keep coming every other scene that it does turn a little tiresome after a point. What hurts is not the sheer number of these references but just that some of them are done clumsily and hurriedly. The cheer we hear is almost always for the famous scenes that are being spoofed and it has very little to do with how this film plays around with those iconic scenes. But Sam Anton does have a lot of good ideas. The plot in itself though sounds flimsy through a self-confession at the beginning has some very interesting threads and characters. As said earlier the decision to move away from a complete spoof and find a middle path results in an interesting if not an exhilarating output. While we have all the buffoonery around, it does not change the fact that the villains are mean and the blood is real. This mix does have a lot of potent. It is not completely wasted here and going by the crowd’s response the makers probably have achieved what they wanted.  But with some refining this film could have been much more than a crowd pleaser.

Bottomline:

EIPI is a crowd pleaser. Is it an intelligent one? Tough to answer. But definitely intelligent (smart rather) in knowing that how much is enough to please the crowds!!!
