Nannakku Prematho Review - watchable for its plot line

Sukumar returns post a full two year hiatus after his big-budgeted outing with Mahesh Babu went blank at the box office. He continues his attempt to provide the ultimate blend of thoughtful and commercial cinema. NTR Jr. returns to the screen post ______ and this being his 25th flick, it is bound to be special. Singh stars alongside NTR for the very first time.

A son attempts to fulfill his father’s dreams.

You know Sukumar is trying his best to satisfy the fans of both – single screens and the multiplex. He puts forth a concept which really gives you something to think about and makes the proceedings extremely interesting. Alas, at an overblown 168 minutes, the movie becomes too long.

Sukumar is in decent form as the director. He is able to provide terrific production values and extract wonderful performances from his cast. However, as a writer, Sukumar’s screenplay goes on for a bit too much and due to the lack of any other major characterization apart from the 3 leads, one fails to connect with the undercurrent of the plotline. Vijay C. Chakravarthy’s cinematography is steady. Devi Sri Prasad’s score is something really funky! His tunes carry this terrific psychedelic feel and Follow Follow is brilliantly choreographed, but the background score doesn’t help much. Peter Hein’s action choreography is great during one action sequence but doesn’t help much during the rest.

NTR Jr.’s brand new dapper look goes well with his overall persona and he does really well as Abhiram. Rakul Preet Singh is decent as the female lead. Jagapathi Babu is the one who takes the cake. He looks just right for the part and acts marvelously. In fact, Babu and Jr.’s confrontation sequences are the best parts of this motion picture. The supporting cast is decent.

Nannaku Prematho has very good moments going for it – like the conversations between the antagonist and the protagonist, Jagapathi Babu’s performance, a nice connotation of Sukumar’s thought and of course, NTR Jr.. However, it goes on for too long and the songs really begin to bore. Avoid all that, and you have an entertainer that is actually watchable for its plotline.
