Inji Iduppazhagi Review - Partly charming and partly confusing

Inji Iduppazhagi -  Partly charming and partly confusing

Bharath Vijayakumar

'You can watch it for it's hero'. This is the sort of bottomline you get for a majority of 'star' driven vehicles. This star is almost always a male. So it is a welcome relief when a film creates a buzz because of it's leading lady.

Plot:

An overweight but pretty girl finds it difficult to get a life partner.

Cast

It is Anushka's show all the way and she shoulders the burden of carrying the film remarkably well. It is not a performance that would get a nomination in an awards ceremony but a charming and delightful one. Arya really plays an extended cameo and if not for anything we got to hand it over to him for repeatedly being part of films where he is not the sole selling face. Urvasi lights up a few moments and also shows glimpses of her versatility.

Crew

The film has a certain charming feel and is like one of those bed time stories happening in a fantasy land. Nirav Shah gets this ambience live and kicking through his lens. The songs do not work in Tamil. They look like  awkwardly dubbed versions from Telugu.

Direction

The biggest strength of the film is the feel good factor and a definite charm. The first half is breezy and light hearted. It is the second half that suffers an identity crisis. The film could have worked purely as a candy floss romance. It tries to give an impression that it wants to give you a message. The episode involving the 'Size Zero' clinic hardly makes an impact. It all looks staged and embarrassingly amateurish. The film tries to make a big fuss about accepting people as they are.

But there is a scene where a fat and dark guy proposes to Anushka. Nothing happens before or after this scene. This is a standalone scene and is supposed to be a comedy where we are supposed to laugh. The bottomline is loud and clear. Even if you are fat you got to be cute or hot. Only then the sermonizing that this film does is applicable. Another phrase often used to describe films with supposedly noble intentions is 'This is a film with it's heart in the right place'. Not sure this would be applicable to Inji Iduppazhagi.

Bottomline

The film works as a mushy romance with Anushka's delightful performance in the forefront. It could have very well done just that. The message part just sticks out like the flab on it's heroine.
