Thangamagan Songs - Music Review

Akilan Nagarajan

Dhanush and Anirudh together have created a musical brand that comes up with fresh and catchy tunes, and they call themselves the 'DnA'. While their first album 3 was replete with classy and hummable numbers, their successive albums -- VIP and Maari were filled with mass numbers. Their 4th album, Thangamagan, has hit the audio stands today. Have they set the bar higher for themselves? Read on!

Tak bak (Listen here)

Singer: Anirudh Ravichander

Catchy singing, but the tune tries too hard to sound catchy. There's a trace of everything - jazz, tamil kuthu, blues, etc. They really don't gel well and somehow end up giving a strong feel of dejavu.

Jodi Nilave  (Listen here)

Singer:  Dhanush & Shweta Mohan

This is exactly what VIP sounded like on first hear. The visuals created magic by elevating simple tracks to really wonderful moments of cinematic love. This song has all the makings to be the same. Definitely the best track of the album.

Enna Solla (Listen here)

Singer: Shweta Mohan

Anirudh safeplays yet again with a predictable tune. Husky voice and flutes are already on the verge of being called cliches, and we are here with this.

Oh Oh  (Listen here)

Singer: Dhanush and Nikhita Ghandi

There is some semblance of effort here, with a soothing tune that doesn't always head to where it predictably might have. This is something you would get if Bruno Mars does a Tamil song. The arrangements and the flow of the track are highly inspired by the Blues of the west.

Verdict:

On the whole, this is a really subtle Anirudh, who entertains with his trademark sounds.
